Ashwagandha has long been used for soothing anxiety.

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha has long been used for soothing anxiety. The herb has active compounds that may have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-stress properties.

One 2014 review noted the effects of ashwagandha on anxiety by analyzing five human trials. In 4 out of 5 trials, it was found that people supplementing with ashwagandha reported less anxiety. However, researchers said that more research needs to be done to confirm the effectiveness of ashwagandha for anxiety. (2)

These herbal supplements are easily available for use, in the form of tincture.

Hops

Hops are herbs that are most commonly used for beer production. There are certain compounds in hops that have a sedating effect, like chamomile. Hence, hops can be an option for helping to deal with anxiety.

A study was conducted in 2017 to assess the impact of hops on people’s mental health coping with anxiety, stress, and other issues. A randomized trial was carried out where participants were given a hops extract or a placebo for four weeks. After a break of 2 weeks, participants given the hops extract were now given a placebo, while those initially given the placebo were now given the hops extract. Researchers analyzed results from the study and found that participants reported substantially less anxiety and depression when given hops extracts. (3)

Hops are available in capsules and tincture forms.

Chamomile

Chamomile is a well-known herb. It is commonly used by those who want a caffeine-free alternative to tea. Popular for alleviating the symptoms of anxiety, it also helps with various mental health issues.

In one 2017 trial, the effect of chamomile supplementation on anxiety was investigated. People with a high level of uneasiness were given pharmaceutical-grade chamomile extracts for a total of 8 weeks. And surprisingly, at the end of the trial, researchers noted that people reported feeling less anxious and showed an improved sense of well-being. (4)

These supplements are also available in tincture form which you can integrate into your daily intake in consultation with your doctor.

Other Effective Methods

Besides taking herbal supplements, there is a lot that you can do to reduce anxiety. Even controlled deep breathing can help. Abdominal breathing is very helpful in relaxing almost instantly in the event of an attack. You should take walks and do mild stretching exercises. Avoid caffeine and alcohol because they can trigger more symptoms. Make sure that you are also getting enough sleep as it helps you to stay calm.

Bottom Line

There are several methods for dealing with anxiety. However, you should always consult your doctor before trying out anything.
