The slippery elm is a large tree native to North America sought after for its bark which has many benefits. It belongs to the genus Ulmus and is usually over 30m tall. Native Americans have always used this tree's inner bark (the bast) in herbal medicine and transmitted these uses to European settlers who quickly adopted them. During the American Civil War era, military surgeons used slippery elm bark poultices to heal soldiers' wounds. From 1820 to 1960, slippery elm bast was included in the official United States Pharmacopoeia as an emollient, mucous membrane softener, and cough suppressant.
